LRML Newsletter: The Wind Is Your Friend
The inaugural issue of a newsletter dedicated to Long Range Muzzle Loading (LRML) is now available. This newsletter was originally the idea of Arleen and Ed Decker, and Lee Shaver, but they didn’t have to twist my arm too hard to agree to help with editing. The concept is to provide a newsletter that can both provide information to those just starting the sport and for those that have loved it for years. We hope to provide information on upcoming matches, the history of long range muzzle loading, tips on how to improve your shooting, upcoming matches, results of matches and much more. We also encourage you to send in your questions about LRML. We have access to some of the most knowledgeable long range muzzle loaders to answer your questions.
This is meant to be YOUR newsletter. The only way that this is going to work is if you send in your information and articles for publication. If you know other people that are interested in LRML but haven’t received a copy, please feel free to forward this on to them.

Oak Ridge, TN – March 2012
Dear LRML Shooters:
This spring match will be my 25th LRML match that I’ve held at Oak Ridge and will be held Friday and Saturday 30/31 March 2012. It is an ORSA Long-Range Muzzle Loading Match using traditional long-range muzzle loading rifles of the mid – late 1800’s and is designed to be an enjoyable shoot.
The distances and format will be slightly different this year as we’ll shoot 200 & 300 on Friday, 600 & 1000 yards will be shot Saturday. Sunday will be reserved for a rain day if needed, if not I plan to open the range at 11am for two 1.5hr practice relays.
Hope to see you in Tennessee.

Cavalry Carbines & Pistols of the Napoleonic Era
Barry Chisnall and Geoff Davies are researching for a new book on Cavalry Carbines & Pistols of the Napoleonic Era. This will cover carbines and pistols from around 1760 until 1820, including the Eliott carbine, the Harcourt & 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbines, the Baker Cavalry Rifle and the Paget Carbine together with earlier carbine bore muskets for both heavy and light dragoons such as the Pattern 1779 Cavalry Carbine and the pattern 1770 Heavy Dragoon Carbine. Also, of course, pistols from that same era.
Short Barrel and Long Range
I found the following account of trials with a short barrelled Remington rifle interesting. I have not been able to discover any follow-up.
New Gun At Creedmoor
Mr. Leonard Geiger, the inventor of the Remington gun, had a new weapon on the range for the purpose of testing its accuracy. This rifle, called by Mr. Geiger, “a son of a gun,” has the stock and breech mechanism of the Remington long-range rifle, without the pistol grip. Its barrel is only twenty-six inches long, but very thick, the weapon weighing slightly over ten pounds. The gun behaved well during its trial, and although not securing the best possible score, was the only weapon used at long range during the day that was not credited with a miss. Mr. Geiger’s theory for using this short barrel is perfect, and if his experiments prove satisfactory, the day of long barrels and heavy charges will be closed. The record at the two ranges was as follows:
900 yards…. 5 5 4 2 4 5 5 2 2 5 – 39 | 1,000 yards…. 4 5 3 4 5 4 5 4 3 5 – 42

East Coast Long Range (Results)
The results for the Long Range Regional Competition are published below. John Whitcomb established a new national record for the 60 shot aggregate for 800yd, 900yd and 1000yd. Congratulations John. The old record was 552 – 15x and John fired a 554 – 12x.
Thanks to all who participated
